Dreaming of a luxurious holiday that allows you the opportunity to lie on the beach for hours on end after endless water activities with your partner, or to build sandcastles in the sunshine with your kids? If so, you’re probably wondering which destination is sure to provide you with the particular idyllic experience that you’re after.

We take a look at the main differences between 3 of the world’s top beach holiday destinations – Zanzibar, Mauritius and the Seychelles.

Zanzibar

Who? If some well-earned R&R is what you’re craving, Zanzibar is a great choice. While there’s certainly plenty to do if you fancy a bit of adventure here and there, most holidaymakers quickly begin to emulate the laid-back, rustic relaxation vibe that exudes from the locals.

Distance? Zanzibar is about a 3.5 hour flight from Johannesburg. Flights from Cape Town require you to make at least one stop along the way, so approximate flight times will vary.

Activities? If you’re keen to take in a culture-rich getaway, as well as a few days of winding down on the beach, you’ll love exploring Zanzibar’s Shirazi heritage and unique plantation homes. There are exciting spice tours, you can visit Prison Island, and even see the incredible giant turtle.

Another highlight for many tourists are the dhow safaris during which you’ll sail on hand-crafted boats and get a glimpse of the island’s most majestic vistas, flora and fauna.

Flight Prices? Flight prices will vary greatly depending on when you book them. However, you’re generally looking at a minimum of R6 000 per person.

When to Go? It is recommended to go between June and October when it’s slightly cooler. However, if you want a piping hot, dry beach holiday, another popular time is December through to end January.

Mauritius

Who? Mauritius is a wonderful family-friendly destination, offering a wide variety of exciting activities and adventures that kids (and eternal kids) of all ages are bound to enjoy.

Distance? Mauritius is a 4.5 hour flight from Johannesburg and a 6.5 hour flight from Cape Town, which means that you won’t have to stress too much about flying with children and trying to cope with the on-board boredom!

Activities? This is a destination that is well-known for its organised activities. Its water sports are probably the most popular and include snorkelling, wind-surfing, diving and kite-surfing. You will also be able to get a taste of classic Creole cuisine and top up your tan on some of the world’s finest beaches. Oh, and a trek through the infamous Mauritius nature trails definitely won’t go amiss either.

Flight Prices? Flights to Mauritius will generally cost you a minimum of R9 000 per person. However, it is also one of the destinations that offers its travellers the most affordable all-inclusive holiday packages, thus making it an ideal choice for those who are trying to find cheap international flights. A package tour to Mauritius will enable you to stick to a tight budget, and reduce overspending during the holiday itself.

When to Go? Most travellers head to Mauritius between October and April.

Seychelles

Who? Those in search of barefoot luxury can always count on the Seychelles to deliver. Its lavish atmosphere also makes it a popular selection for romantic honeymooners. In short, if you’re looking to treat yourself, the Seychelles is where to do it!

Distance? Holidaymakers can expect just under 5 hours of flight time to get to the Seychelles from Johannesburg and 8.5 hours from Cape Town.

Activities? While this Indian Ocean island is quite a bit more expensive than both Zanzibar and Mauritius, it offers travellers views and beaches unlike any other location. It is also known for its variety of activities such as yacht cruises, deep-sea fishing (you could be fortunate enough to reel in sailfish, yellow tuna and wahoo, to name a few), diving, hiking, surfing and kite-surfing.

You’ll also want to set aside some time to pay a visit to the Île aux Aigrettes, a spectacular nature reserve boasting incredible wildlife including giant tortoises and the endangered pink pigeon.

Flight Prices? Flight prices average at around R7 500 per person.

When to Go? The weather is at its best between the months of April and September.

Ultimately, whether you choose to visit Zanzibar, Mauritius or Seychelles, there’s no doubt that you’ll be able to find the cheapest flight tickets on the Cheap International Flights website. Planning a holiday on a budget has never been easier.
