Best Places for South Africans to go on Ski Holidays

South Africans are spoilt for choice when it comes to holiday activities – except when it comes to skiing.

For an authentic ski holiday experience, complete with snow-covered slopes, ski lifts, and alpine towns that look like they were lifted from a postcard, you’ll need to head overseas.

Despite the weak Rand and tight holiday budgets, South Africans can still enjoy unforgettable ski holidays overseas.

With a budget of R25 000 or higher per person, you should be able to plan a really enjoyable ski holiday by choosing the right location and accommodation.

Europe – the classic ski destination

When you think of skiing, the first place that probably comes to mind is Switzerland. The Swiss Alps are world-famous for their perfect snow and skiing conditions, but unfortunately they are also famous for their high prices.

If you’re thinking of going to Europe on a skiing holiday, there are two countries (both neighbours of Switzerland) that offer excellent value: Italy and Austria.

Italian hospitality in Livigno

The ski town of Livigno, Italy is a great choice for travellers who want to stretch their Rand.

This out-of-the-way Italian ski town is near the Swiss border, offering excellent slopes, excellent Italian hospitality, and almost the same snow as you’d find over the border at several times the price.

  • Livigno’s low prices are partly due to the town’s VAT-free status, which keeps the cost of accommodation, food and drinks, and shopping lower than the surrounding area.
  • The slopes are great for beginners and intermediate skiers, with freeriding and heliski tours available to experts for an extra fee.

Alpbach – the doorway to skiing in Austria

Less than an hour by road from Innsbruck, Alpbach is one of the best ski towns for beginners to learn the slopes.

  • The picturesque “chocolate box” town is packed with bars, cafes, and reasonably-priced accommodation
  • Alpbach’s  friendly locals are extremely welcoming and are used to welcoming English-speaking travellers.

Alpbach runs several promotions throughout the ski season, including Family Week when kids can ride the ski lifts free of charge.

Premium destinations – Switzerland and North America

If the cost of your ski trip is less of a factor than luxury and an unforgettable experience, there are two countries that offer the kind of holiday you’ll enjoy – Switzerland and the USA.

While some Swiss ski towns will stretch even the biggest holiday budget, resorts like La Tzoumaz offer excellent value.

Located in the Four Valleys region, near the world-famous Verbier ski resort, La Tzoumaz offers magnificent scenery and luxurious Piste-side accommodation with beautiful views of the nearby ski runs.

If North America is high on your list of ski destinations, you may be keen to ski near Aspen, Colorado. While prices in this landmark ski town can be astronomical, the town of Keystone near Denver offers excellent value for money.

With access to four nearby valleys and several ski slopes, Keystone offers the best of Colorado skiing at prices that make the town ideal for South African visitors.
